A few tips on choosing a domain name

Domain names often reflect the webmaster's ingenuity, creativity and his deep understanding of online business. If a webmaster was able to come up with an original, interesting, keyword-relevant and popular domain name, he has won half of the battle in terms of generating traffic to his site. Here are some more tips to consider.

1. Choose a domain name that will best describe your main products and services or your company. To do this, write the name of your company, the name of your product and your targeted keywords. Mix and match these until you come up with a domain name that has great impact to your target market. For example, if you offer accommodation on the moon, you could consider moonaccommodation.com.

2. Forget big words. Supercalifragilisticexpeliadocious is definitely not a good choice. Your love for big words is unfortunately useless in picking your domain name as errors in spelling are common.

3. Make your domain name easy to remember. If you have already established your name in your field, then by all means use your full name and suffix it with .com. Your name will be easier to remember than the company you represent or the products you are selling.

4. If you think you have found the best domain name for your company and you find it's already taken, do not despair. You still have a chance of procuring it by contacting the owner and inquiring if he or she is selling it. Most webmasters sell domain names that they no longer use.

5. Try to keep your domain name short. Do your potential visitors a favor by letting them type as little as possible in the search field. If you can make a 3 to 6-letter domain name (ACE.com, shirt.com, forex.com) there is a much better chance that your target market will remember it.
